About City Death Records in Alabama
Alabama cities do not maintain their own vital records offices. Death certificates are issued by county health departments, which serve all cities and unincorporated areas within their boundaries. When you need a death certificate for someone who died in an Alabama city, you will work with the county health department for that location.
All five major Alabama cities listed above are county seats. This means the county health department is typically located within or near the city center. Huntsville is served by Madison County, Mobile by Mobile County, Birmingham by Jefferson County, Montgomery by Montgomery County, and Tuscaloosa by Tuscaloosa County.
Jefferson County operates its own independent health department (JCDH) that is separate from the Alabama Department of Public Health system. The other four counties are part of the statewide ADPH network. All county health departments, including JCDH, can issue certified death certificates and access statewide records through the ViSION system.
